Flame and the Arrow

The Flame and the Arrow (1950), reż. Jacques Tourneur

„Nie ufaj panterze, gdy przestaje warczeć, ani kobiecie, gdy przestaje mówić”. Bohater tego filmu ma powód, by nie ufać kobietom, ale wkrótce pozna damę, która okaże się lojalna, mimo że została potraktowana bez szacunku, należnego jej pozycji. Głównym bohaterem jest waleczny i odważny łucznik imieniem Dardo, postać o podobnym charakterze, What Robin Hood. Like the archer from Sherwood, Dardo is outlawed, a German rulers Lombardy, Count Ulrich wants to capture him with insidious methods - kidnapping his son, or threatening to hang the innocent people.

more appropriate as the title here Hawk and the Arrow, because these are the attributes sequentially count and outlaw, and the flame of the title does not have too great a role. Unless it is a passionate love between the protagonist and a beautiful aristocrat Anna, who even tied up in chains retains an aristocratic charm, grace and honor. When the impression of a proud and unapproachable lady, the viewer no time should doubt that the more it goes to the full danger, mystery and legend owianego, world of outlaws - people who pay no taxes and are "free as birds."

Already in the first minutes after the top we can see great music. Its author is valued by critics and in demand by directors emigrant from Austria, Max Steiner. His most famous song is probably 'about Tara' from Gone with the Wind , but the best in terms of art is, in my opinion, his music is from the movie in question. His compositions in the film Flame and the Arrow perfectly fit into the medieval times the Italian aristocracy and lawless adventurers.

Like Steiner, the operator of Ernest Haller also worked on the film Gone with the Wind . Wowed the audience, creating a colorful visual setting. It is no different in the movie Flame and the Arrow. While in the 50s Technicolor has been dominated by Eastmancolor, it managed to Haller using color in Technicolor show unique exotic images of vision twelfth-century Lombardy, a historic land located in northern Italy.

Burt Lancaster in the role of an adventurer falls far better than Errol Flynn, the greater the pity that this film apart from and in addition to the Crimson Pirate Lancaster did not play a similar role anymore. In his youth he was a circus acrobat, so all the acrobatics and stunts performed without a stunt double (even when we see him dressed as a clown, we can be sure that this is a Lancaster). Both the Flame and shot as well as pirate Crimson Lancaster played with another circus performer Nick Cravat, who due to inadequate emphasis in both films he played dumb. In the film, Tourneur is best presented with three actors - in addition to Lancaster and Cravat is still a great Virginia Mayo in the role of Anne.

To produce a good adventure film is often needed a good book, but the Waldo Salt based his screenplay on his own idea, creating a neat story, in which the deeds of heroes are its logical justification. French director Jacques Tourneur, a specialist full of mysteries and horror black and white horror movies (People-cats ) coped well with the colorful, decorated in a fast-paced adventure film. A duel with swords between Burt Lancaster and Robert Douglas is quite good, and the finale of the duel takes place in darkness, which is quite unusual gambit director. The film lasts 88 minutes, which on the one hand, it is an advantage, because there is no longueur, but on the other hand, felt unsatisfied that this adventure takes so long. Would like to see continuing adventures of the archer from Lombardy, as an unofficial sequel, which is Crimson Pirate, not enough for me, but it is surely just as excellent and sometimes even more inventive and fun.
